Regularly Review VFW’S Code of Ethics
Bob Green, National Assistant Quartermaster General
Ethics is the study of moral standards and how they affect conduct. It
involves the ability to tell right from wrong. We all want to work in
an ethical environment. When organizations are transparent, equitable,
consistent and fair in their politics and administration, there is greater
trust.
At VFW, employees, members and donors can feel confident that their efforts
and money are being wisely and fairly used.
In order to sustain VFW’s reputation and assure its continued success,
members in leadership positions are expected to conduct themselves in a
professional manner and, in accordance with our rituals, “live lives of
stainless integrity.” Leaders must adhere to the highest standards of
honesty, integrity, and professional conduct and comply with the code of
ethics.
VFW’s national code of ethics states that all officers, council members,
employees, and other persons in leadership positions shall:
· Display personal
integrity, avoid misrepresentation and always be honest with others;
· Act in a professional
manner at all times;
· Promote an environment
where honesty and open communication are valued;
· Resolve differences of
opinion in a professional and mature manner;
· Respect the
confidentiality of privileged information;
· Refuse to engage in or
tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment toward members, employees,
volunteers or other officers;
· Exhibit respect and
fairness toward all people;
· Speak highly of the
organization and its members; and
· Promote the VFW and
support the activities of the organization.
It also states that individuals should not use VFW resources for personal
gain. Furthermore, we all must avoid the appearance of conflicts of
interest that would tarnish the VFW’s image.
It may be a good time to review the code of ethics at your Post and ensure
that it is communicated and enforced throughout your membership. We
become better people and a stronger organization when we adhere to high
ethical standards.
