There has apparently been some confusion regarding the reporting of donated items to charitable organizations. To clarify the following portion of Page 3 of the 2006-2007 Programs Guide, "It's About Service," "Donating items to charitable organizations. Report cash value and actual time to collect."
IRS rules do not differentiate between items purchased or collected - only that the amount of the deduction reflect the fair market value of the item(s) at the time of the donation.
For the purpose of reporting community service volunteer efforts, the VFW National Office gives credit for any and all items: purchased, donated, collected, etc.

Thank you.
